A Deep Dive into Sunscreen

A Deep Dive into Sunscreen

If you’re curious about all-natural sunscreen and how it works then this post is for you!

I receive quite a few questions about how I calculate the sun protection factor level, or more familiarly know as SPF level, of my sunscreen and I’m very excited to get into the nitty gritty of it…

☀️ shea butter: approximately 4 SPF
☀️ coconut oil: approximately 6 SPF
☀️ beeswax: although it doesn’t have a sun protection value on its own, it allows this sunscreen to keep its shape and be water resistant
☀️ cocoa powder: like beeswax, this ingredient doesn’t have a SPF value, but creates a sunscreen that is less likely to have a white cast
☀️ non-nano zinc oxide: 1% of zinc oxide in a sunscreen provides approximately 1 SPF. In Gingerly Snapped’s recipe, zinc oxide makes up nearly 25% and thus adds 25 SPF to the formula.

And while we’re looking at the zinc oxide, do you know why Gingerly Snapped chooses to use zinc oxide labeled as “non-nano”? The terms nano vs non-nano refer to the size of the particles of zinc oxide. Non-nano zinc oxide is larger - large enough that it doesn’t absorb into the skin or affect marine life like nano zinc oxide.

So rest assured that when you see us flaunt our non-nano zinc oxide, it’s because our product is safer and more environmentally friendly than other sunscreens.

Are you ready to make a leap into all-natural sunscreen this summer? Your skin - and the environment - will thank you!
